Form, Lighting, and Perspective Part 1
online
lecture
We start with single point perspective and why it is important to understand form.
On Demand
Form, Lighting, and Perspective Part 2
online
lecture
We get into two point perspective that explains it in a revolutionary way that anyone will finally grasp. I used to struggle so much with perspective until I discovered this new way to understand it. You will be able to turn objects in rooms and everything.
On Demand
Form, Lighting, and Perspective Part 3
online
lecture
After you learn the new revolutionary way to understand perspective, you will be able to draw in three point perspective pretty easily. That is what this lecture is all about. Drawing in three point perspective.
On Demand
Form, Lighting, and Perspective Part 4
online
lecture
In this lecture, you will master the sphere by first learning the basic lighting set up and how light works and reveals form. After this lecture, and after doing the exercises in it, you will be able to paint and draw 3D spheres from your imagination using any light angle and as many light sources as you wish.
On Demand
Form, Lighting, and Perspective Part 5
online
lecture
Now you will learn to draw shadows in perspective and how to bundle shapes together to form more complex shapes.
On Demand
Form, Lighting, and Perspective Part 6
online
lecture
In this lecture, we master the cube and flat planes. We also learn more about form and the 3D mesh you can imagine around any object.
On Demand
Form, Lighting, and Perspective Part 7
online
lecture
Now we master the cylinder. We also learn how to form the human figure out of cylinders and spheres, as well as a basic cartoon cat. We start to understand how all 3D objects are just a bunch of basic shapes meshed together.
On Demand
Form, Lighting, and Perspective Part 8
online
lecture
Next we master the cone.
On Demand
Form, Lighting, and Perspective Part 9
online
lecture

Now we tackle light, and how it reveals the 3D shape of an object. We learn a bit about color, warm and cool light, and warm and cool shadows. We get into how light reveals texture as well. Just by how we light something, we can make it clay, plastic, or metal. I show how to understand this.

On Demand
Form, Lighting, and Perspective Part 10
online
lecture

Now we put all this information together and like magic we draw a spawn with basic shapes. Then we refine the form with a good lighting system that we learned already. Then we refine it more by adding deatils to make it look realistic.

We also tackle forshortening, arms and fingers being forshortened.

On Demand
Form, Lighting, and Perspective Part 11
online
lecture
Now we learn more advanced concepts of form, and the 3D mesh of all objects. We learn to draw an alien head using basic 3D shapes, lighting them, then seeing the more complex mesh in it. We learn to see meshes in a master painting. We learn to draw fingers, hands, muscles using the mesh form and lighting it realistically from imagination.
On Demand
Form, Lighting, and Perspective Part 12
online
lecture
Finally, we apply everything we have learned and paint two pictures, using dynamic lighting. This is the power of drawing from imagination.
On Demand
Bonus Clothes
online
lecture
In this lesson, we learn how to apply all this knowledge to drawing clothes. How we can see clothes as basic shapes, meshes, that are lighting to reveal texture and shape.
On Demand
Bonus Light 1
online
lecture

Because I'm a nice guy, I've added bonuses. This lecture goes into more complex ideas about shadow, like what happens when shadows overlap from one light source, or two light sources, or three light sources. We go more into color and how it is affected.

On Demand
Bonus Light 2
online
lecture
We light a scene of people sitting around a magical light source and learn many things along the way.
On Demand
Bonus Painting Lesson

Reviews of Discover How to Draw and paint Comics

  1. Posted by Leon Moyer| March 23, 2016

The information is great, but the length of each session is a bit long. Aside from that, it's a very helpful course!

  2. Posted by James Taylor| March 16, 2016

Extremely insightful, and Neil explains his methods in full. Make sure you practice the excercises and you're on your way. Highly recommended.

  3. Posted by Adrian| March 11, 2016

I have four of Neil's courses and as a result of my learning so far my art skill has definitely improved. My feedback for Neil is like what others are saying here- he would profit from learning a teaching methodology and being more organized before he starts filming. Often the segments are too long because of a lack of organization and he seems to both be immersed in his own flow and then interrupts himself midstream and changes what he initially intended to do. That said, he is a generous teacher and I really appreciate his insistence on practice. More than once his attitude has given me that extra push of motivation that has made the difference. I will keep on with all the material although sometimes it can feel like a long slow trudge

LE CONTENU EST COMPLET ET INSTRUCTIF.

  5. Posted by Zach McClary| February 28, 2016

Great course and comprehensive. Neil packs a ton of great material in here, price is great and the teaching style is 'real' and down-to-Earth. I really enjoyed what I learned and it gave me a great place to start; I would recommend that if you are serious about wanting to be able to draw and paint, illustrate or design, that you look for other resources to use alongside, this course will help you decide what and where to practice, but like anything you decide how good you want to be at something.

  6. Posted by Miguel Guerrero| February 27, 2016

Content is great and the course is all in all very complete, but personally, I think the videos are too lengthy and could be shorter and more compact.

  7. Posted by Bryan McCoy| February 27, 2016

The quality of the lecture was great, but as the instructor said, It should have been divided into two courses. One involving the understanding of basic shapes, and then one adding perspective, without jumping back and forth so much throughout long single lesson.

    Awsom!

  9. Frustrating
    Posted by Nichola Harris| February 11, 2016

I find this course incredibly frustrating. Neil is obviously very good at what he does, and I can see some posts from people who have some great illustrations, that this course has worked for them. I am only on the first lesson which is very long and I feel that if Neil had a lot more structure to his lesson that the lesson would take half the time than what it is at the moment. He doesn't explain things very well to the point where I have had to write notes to then go away and find another source that answers the questions that Neil sets up, these answers should be here. Neil gets distracted easily with different things to consider which are all valid points and valid aspects but he is all over the place when explaining, for example, talks about perspective using a vanishing point of cubed shapes/shapes with sharp points then moves on to spheres, he shows the technique of drawing hoops in a sphere, then on a thought starts drawing pyramids, of which it seems he doesn't have the answer of how to draw a pyramid with two vanishing points and spends time in the tutorial figuring this out and then getting distracted again, works out how to draw a pyramid with one vanishing point but not two( which was the first question regarding pyramids), then comes back to the sphere but doesn't explain why hoops need to be drawn inside the sphere and doesn't explain/answer how this relates back to the vanishing point and then to try and help you understand starts drawing other circular objects but with out explanation in the first place, he then goes straight into drawing tubes. At one point Neil starts to talk about how to draw a person looking up and down at someone and actually says ''I think I said something wrong a second ago, I didn't mean to, hopefully you caught it'' No I didn't catch it, and he doesn't explain what he did that he wasn't suppose to do, this is a course where we are suppose to be learning and he doesn't correct himself. Repetitively states 'it is important for you to understand these principals' but doesn't clearly state what they are. It is a shame, Neil knows his stuff, but his reliance on his own intuition and experience have a negative impact on his communication and structure of this course, this would be a badass course if this was dealt with, I would give it 5 stars but right now, while I am learning how to draw on this course, it also wastes my time as a lot of this is unproductive, I will how ever continue on this course, as I have paid for it, and as I can see that others have achieved some wicked results.

  10. Fabulous

Thank you Explaining Perspectives .. it's very important critical part of any art-form. wish there were more emphasis on " how to draw muscle, details ( Clothing ) through perspective" . OVerall 8.5 /10 :)
